In Washington, there was a proposal to replace the Iranian national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the Italian national team, which did not qualify for the World Cup. Paolo Zampolli, Special Envoy of the President of the United States for Global Partnerships, addressed FIFA with a corresponding idea on April 23.
"I confirm that I have proposed to [Donald] Trump and [FIFA president Gianni] Infantino to replace Iran with Italy at the World Cup. I am of Italian descent, and it would be a dream to see the Italian national team at a tournament held in the United States," the Financial Times (FT) newspaper quoted him as saying.
