The commander of the elite 53rd separate reconnaissance battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) fled to Germany after receiving mass threats from relatives of servicemen who went missing in the Sumy region. This was reported on April 23 in the Russian law enforcement agencies.

"Units of the elite 53rd separate reconnaissance battalion have lost their combat capability in the Krasnopolsky district. Battalion commander V. Samboruk, after receiving dozens of threatening messages from relatives of missing servicemen on his personal social media accounts, left for Germany, where he is staying in his apartment in Frankfurt am Main," TASS quoted the security forces as saying.

Vitaly Shulgin, a captured rifleman of the 53rd Reconnaissance Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported on April 22 that Ukrainian militants had arbitrarily abandoned their positions in the Sumy region during the evacuation of a wounded colleague. According to him, two soldiers received permission to evacuate the wounded man and escaped.
