The deaths of parrots poisoned at a private petting zoo in Kudrovo, Leningrad region, were not related to food intake. This was announced to Izvestia on April 22 by the director of the institution Pavel Germanov.

The zoo owner clarified that he had ordered an autopsy of two dead birds — according to preliminary results, the parrots had no stomach damage, but hemorrhagic infarctions of the lungs, liver and kidneys, as well as brain edema, were found.

"We are talking about toxic, toxic substances that got [into the body], apparently, not through the gastrointestinal tract," concluded Vladimir Romanov, Doctor of Biological Sciences, who conducted the autopsy.

On April 8, unidentified people gassed about 70 parrots in a private zoo in the city of Kudrovo in the Leningrad region, killing 35 birds, including a famous cockatoo that took part in the filming of films. Two zoo staff members were also injured during the incident and had to be hospitalized. One of the injured girls named Ulyana told Izvestia that the tragedy happened when the first visitors came to the zoo — families with children.

Later, the Regional Investigative Committee (IC) opened a criminal case into the mass death of birds. Mikhail Goloyad, the chief doctor of the veterinary clinic and a veterinarian ornithologist, told Izvestia that the health of the surviving individuals is not in danger now.
