London poll predicts "historic defeat" for Starmer's Labour Party
The Labor Party of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which is rapidly losing ratings, may lose a record number of votes in the upcoming municipal elections on May 7. This was reported by Bloomberg on April 22.
According to a survey of more than 4.5 thousand Londoners, the Labor Party is still in the lead in the capital with 26% of the vote, but will be able to get a majority in only 15 of the 32 districts, compared with their victory in 21 districts in 2022.
It is noted that Starmer's party is losing votes both in favor of the Green Party of England and Wales, which is catching up with it, claiming victory in four districts, as well as Nigel Farage's Reform UK, which is gaining popularity and leading in three districts.
At the same time, the survey showed the "fragmentation" of British politics, as in half of London's districts several parties are going "toe to toe" at once.
"The survey predicts seismic changes in the capital's local government, with significant gains for the Greens and Reform UK, as well as historic losses for Labour, which looks set to lose councils it has controlled for decades," says a YouGov analysis.
On April 20, US President Donald Trump criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, who is suspected of passing government information to financier Jeffrey Epstein, as British ambassador. The American leader stressed that Starmer has "plenty" of time to fix the situation.
Mandelson's detention became known on February 23. It was noted that the former ambassador, who denies any wrongdoing, was taken to the police station for questioning.
On September 11 last year, Starmer fired Mandelson from his post as the kingdom's ambassador to the United States because of his ties to Epstein. The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with the financier are significantly different from those known at the time of his appointment.
The Reuters news agency reported on April 17 that Starmer does not intend to resign amid the scandal surrounding Mandelson, who failed a security check, but nevertheless took up his post. The prime minister stated that he was not aware of the violation.
