The Feast of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ in 2026 will be celebrated on May 21, and the Day of the Holy Trinity on May 31. Both of these events are directly related to the date of Easter and relate to the passing church holidays. Their calendar shift is explained by the peculiarities of calculating Easter, from which they are counted, as well as differences in Orthodox, Catholic and Jewish traditions. This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by the clergyman of the Ivanovo-Voznesenskaya diocese, Hieromonk Makary (Markish) of the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to him, the key element in understanding "floating" dates is Easter itself, which in the Christian tradition is determined through a complex system associated with the lunar and solar calendars. In Orthodoxy, the date of Easter is tied to the vernal equinox and the first full moon after it, which makes it change annually.
"Orthodox Easter Day was originally linked to the Jewish Easter. The Jewish Easter is based on the lunar calendar. These holidays fall on different days in different years. And all the other holidays. Ascension comes 40 days after Easter, Trinity comes 50 days after Easter, and so on," he said.
Speaking about the spiritual side of the holidays, the priest stressed that their meaning is not limited to external actions or formal rules. He noted that during the holidays it is not necessary to drink, fight and brawl, adding that this applies to any situation in life.
Earlier, on April 21, Orthodox Christians celebrated a special parents' day — Radonitsa. Prayer is given priority on this day, because from the point of view of the Orthodox faith, this is the only way to communicate with the deceased.
