- The seismic station announced the absence of a tsunami threat to the southern Kuril Islands.
The southern Kuril Islands are not in danger, despite a strong earthquake that occurred off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu. This was announced on April 20 by Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 was recorded in the northern part of Honshu, in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, near the prefectures of Aomori and Iwate. A tsunami threat was declared in Japan, with a maximum wave height of 80 cm off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.
"No tsunami alert has been issued for the coast of the southern Kuril Islands. There was no data on the impact of the Japanese earthquake in the Kuril Islands," the seismologist said in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
