Regular physical exercise can significantly improve the condition of children and adolescents with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Vladimir Skavysh, a pediatric psychiatrist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on April 22.

"Depression and anxiety disorders are becoming more common among teenagers. Even in the absence of a serious diagnosis, such conditions can lead to lower academic performance, social isolation, and loss of interest in life," the specialist noted.

Skavysh emphasized that traditional methods of treatment — psychotherapy and medications — do not always give stable results, so physical activity is of particular importance. Programs that combine aerobic exercise, such as running, walking, or dancing, with moderate strength exercises are considered the most effective.

The expert explained that for depressive symptoms, moderate exercise for 8-12 weeks is optimal, whereas for anxiety, milder and more gentle exercises are better suited. The effect is especially pronounced in adolescents over 12 years of age, who are more likely to experience stress and lead a sedentary lifestyle.

According to the doctor, the positive effect of physical activity is associated with physiological changes in the body. Stress levels decrease, sleep improves, and neuroplasticity processes increase, which helps the nervous system adapt to stress.

In addition, psychological and social factors play an important role. Regular classes help teenagers feel in control of their lives, increase self-esteem, and establish communication with their peers.

Skavysh noted that physical activity can be used as a universal support tool, both in combination with basic treatment and in cases where traditional methods are less effective.

News portal Phys.org On January 16, he reported on the health effects of prolonged loneliness. According to the publication, the prolonged absence of romantic relationships at a young age leads to a deterioration in psychological well-being, increased loneliness and decreased life satisfaction.
