Ireland is considering the possibility of deporting 16,000 Ukrainian refugees living through social support measures by terminating their accommodation contracts. This was reported on April 19 by the British newspaper The Sunday Times.

"The Minister of Migration, Colm Brophy, said that the government intends to terminate the remaining contracts, under which about 16 thousand people were accommodated," the publication says.

The official noted that Ireland offers refugees attractive conditions compared to other EU states. However, asylum seekers will still have to leave the country.

"We want to end the situation where these people live off state support. No other EU country provides such conditions. They will have to leave," the minister said.

The newspaper reported on the same day that Ukrainians living in Ireland would be offered a generous package of cash assistance in the amount of €2.5 thousand per person to return home, as the government plans to terminate all contracts for refugee accommodation within 12 months. At the same time, Irish lawmakers are already working on a return policy, timed to coincide with the repeal of the directive and offering financial support for returning to Ukraine.
