- The United States allowed the extension of the truce with Iran even in the event of a failure of negotiations
The US Permanent Representative to the UN, Michael Waltz, admitted that Washington could extend the ceasefire with Tehran, even if the parties could not agree on the terms of a peace agreement by Wednesday, April 22. He stated this on April 19 in an interview with NBC News, posted on YouTube.
"Absolutely all options are on the table," Waltz said, answering a question about whether there is a possibility that US President Donald Trump will extend the ceasefire with Iran.
However, Waltz also indicated that the final decision on this issue remains with Trump. The US Permanent Representative to the UN added that a new round of US-Iranian talks will take place in the next 24 hours.
US President Donald Trump said earlier in the day that representatives of his administration were heading to Islamabad to participate in negotiations on Iran. The new round is expected to take place on Monday, April 20th. The American leader added that the United States would offer a reasonable and fair deal to the Iranian representatives.
The day before, the Iranian Armed Forces announced the restoration of military control over the Strait of Hormuz due to the blockade by the United States. Later, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz from the evening of April 18 until the complete lifting of the US naval blockade.
On the night of April 8, Trump announced that he had agreed to suspend strikes on Iran for another two weeks. The condition for this was the complete unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has received a 10-point proposal from Iran to resolve the conflict. At the same time, the head of the White House declared his readiness to resume hostilities against Iran if the United States could not conclude an agreement.
