- A resident of besieged Leningrad declared the need for a genetic memory of the Great Patriotic War
The genetic memory of the Great Patriotic War is necessary to preserve the historical truth. This was stated on April 19 by Irina Bulina, a resident of besieged Leningrad, at the opening of the "No Statute of Limitations" action center in the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation.
"Our memory will be forever. Our whole country needs it. Just as during the war and the blockade, everyone felt like a part of our country, so should our children. You can't bring them up by force or persuasion, but you have to make them feel it. Therefore, I believe that our activities should continue as long as we have enough strength and health," Bulina said.
State Duma deputy Olga Zanko noted that this year's Memorial Day for the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People is being held at the official level for the first time. This was made possible by the United Russia law on the establishment of a new commemorative date — April 19. Zanko stressed that over the past few years, Russian courts have proved that more than 8 million people suffered from the genocide of the Soviet people.
"People's lives, the fate of their families are behind this figure, and some still don't know what happened to their loved ones," she added.
Bulina recalled that Leningrad wanted to be wiped off the face of the earth, and the invaders did not need the city's population, as they would have to be fed. According to her, this is genocide. She also said that after the war she traveled to places related to the blockade and saw the concentration camp in the former stables of the Nabokov estate. In her opinion, it is impossible to forget it.
The Action Center "Without a Statute of Limitations" was created to promptly support the Day of Unified Actions in memory of the genocide of the Soviet people by the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War.
On January 27, the All-Russian action "Spark of Hope" took place in St. Petersburg, timed to coincide with the Day of the complete lifting of the siege of Leningrad. The action ended with the lighting of thousands of sparklers, symbolizing the memory and continuity of generations.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin laid flowers at the Rubezhny Kamen monument on Nevsky Prospekt. This place, from where Soviet troops repeatedly tried to break the siege of Leningrad, has become one of the most heroic and tragic symbols of the struggle for the city.
