European officials prefer not to advertise their dependence on Russian nuclear fuel supplies. This was reported on April 18 by the newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

The article quotes the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, who called for lessons to be learned from the new energy crisis provoked by the conflict over Iran. She believes that the way out is electrification at the expense of domestic resources, in particular in nuclear energy.

"However, Europe has long been less autonomous in the nuclear sphere than von der Leyen and the European Commission would probably like. Despite great efforts, the continent is still heavily dependent on Russia," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, a quarter of the enriched uranium needed by the EU countries is still supplied from Russia. It will take Europe years to finally overcome this dependence, however, according to the newspaper, they prefer to keep silent about this problem in Brussels.

Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, said on March 20 that Russia and its partners are not in danger of a uranium famine, since they are provided with raw materials for many years. According to him, Russia is the only state that uses uranium and plutonium from recycled spent fuel to operate a nuclear power plant (NPP).
