The Prime Minister of Malaysia announced plans to consider purchases of Russian oil
The national oil and gas company Petronas may consider starting negotiations with Russia on oil supplies. This was announced on April 19 by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
"In the current situation, our team, including Petronas, can negotiate with Russia so that Russia, as a friendly country, covers part of our needs," the local Bernama news agency quoted him as saying.
Ibrahim noted that such an option is being discussed against the background of changes in the position of a number of Western countries that previously imposed sanctions against Moscow, but are once again interacting with the Russian energy market under economic pressure. According to him, Malaysia's relations with Russia remain stable.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the aggravation of the geopolitical situation involving Iran, the United States and European countries has an impact on the global fuel market and supply logistics. At the same time, he stressed that Malaysia's priority remains to meet its own needs, and the possibility of assistance to other states will depend on the availability of excess resources.
In March, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, in turn, noted that India and other countries were actively considering the possibility of increasing purchases of Russian oil, which arose due to the lifting of sanctions by American leader Donald Trump on oil sales operations.
