- The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon and expressed hope for its observance.
Russia welcomes the ten-day cessation of hostilities in Lebanon announced on April 16 and hopes that it will be respected. This was announced on April 17 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"We welcome the truce agreement that has been reached, which has made it possible to stop the bloodshed. We hope that the ceasefire will be strictly observed, which will create conditions for a sustainable de-escalation in Lebanon," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
As Zakharova noted, from the very beginning of the escalation in the Middle East, Russia called for a cease-fire and a transfer of the conflict to a political and diplomatic channel. The Foreign Ministry positively assessed the first direct contact between representatives of Lebanon and Israel in 33 years, which took place on April 14.
It clarifies that Moscow unequivocally supports the parties' desire for peace if it is sincere and serious and hopes that the countries will be able to find common ground.
The truce between Israel and Lebanon for a period of 10 days came into force at 0:00 Moscow time on the same day. Prior to that, on April 16, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire after trilateral negotiations. He noted that representatives of the two countries met in Washington for the first time in 34 years with the participation of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
