An increase in the number of women among taxi drivers has been recorded in Russia

There is an increase in the number of women working as taxi drivers in Russia, Stanislav Egovtsev, founder of the STAX taxi company, told Izvestia on Sunday, April 19. According to him, the proportion of women in this profession has increased from 1-2% in 2015 to 5-8% in 2026.

"The dynamics are obvious, and the industry is noticing this," said Egovtsev.

The expert stressed that an important factor for the further influx of personnel will be the widespread introduction of standards for the installation of video surveillance cameras in car interiors. In a number of countries, this legal requirement is already in effect and protects both the driver and the passenger.

"When the norm for cameras in taxi salons appears in Russia, the number of women driving taxis will increase significantly. I am sure: It's not a question of "if", but "when," he added.

Among the main reasons for choosing this profession in Russia, the specialist identified a flexible schedule and the absence of an income ceiling. It is also noted that women often have a higher rating and receive more tips due to their careful driving style and cleanliness in the cabin.

According to Egovtsev, this trend is consistent with global practice. In the United States, the share of women drivers in Uber and Lyft services is 27%, and in Japan this segment is considered prestigious and highly paid. In countries such as India, Egypt and the UAE, there are specialized services where both drivers and passengers are exclusively women.

On April 6, it was reported that in Russia it is planned to begin detecting taxi drivers' fatigue, deterioration of their well-being or abnormal behavior using the ERA-GLONASS state information system. Alexey Raikevich, CEO of GLONASS JSC, explained that the cooperation will be aimed at testing taxi drivers' work and rest monitoring systems and introducing advanced driving style monitoring systems.
