Cardiologist revealed the reason for men's susceptibility to strokes
The main reason why men are more prone to stroke is due to the fact that they tend to have more negative factors that lead to circulatory disorders, Denis Prokofiev, a cardiologist and holder of the Moscow Doctor status, noted in an interview with Izvestia.
"Such risks include uncontrolled blood pressure, abdominal obesity, and bad habits," the specialist explained.
In addition, women are more protected from stroke due to their hormonal background, he noted. Estrogens affect the functioning of the central nervous system, positively affecting the emotional state and stress tolerance. At the same time, women are more prone to expressing feelings, which helps to relieve negative emotions in time.
"In the male body, the levels of adrenaline, serotonin, and cortisol (the stress hormone) are subject to fairly strong fluctuations. All this creates a huge load on the blood vessels," the cardiologist warned, stressing that pent—up emotions, chronic stress and depression often serve as a starting point for a stroke.
