Russia does not intend to support the initiative of France and the United Kingdom to organize a summit on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as it does not contain peace proposals. This was stated on April 17 by Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matvienko following the results of the 152nd Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union.

"We see that this initiative is aimed at the interests of these states, nothing more than to increase the military presence in the Persian Gulf zone...> As if the desire to participate, but at the same time respecting their own interests. We do not support such initiatives," the Federation Council Chairman said.

She stressed that Russia has a positive attitude towards all initiatives that are based on compliance with international law and seek to resolve through peaceful diplomacy, which does not include the proposal of France and Great Britain.

"Russia stands for unified, universal, indivisible security, equal for all states," Matvienko said.

The Politico newspaper reported on March 24 that the UK had proposed holding a summit on security issues related to the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. According to the interlocutors, Britain intends to propose to the countries the creation of a coalition to open a safe route through the strait and ensure safe merchant shipping.

The Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported on April 17 that France had not invited NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to the Strait of Hormuz summit, rejecting the British proposal. According to the newspaper, Paris and London are planning to host the event this week. Representatives of about 40 countries are expected to attend the meeting at the Elysee Palace.
