- Fetisov condemned athletes for ending their careers because they were not allowed to start
Professional athletes who cannot compete in international competitions due to sanctions should transfer their experience and help students of children's sports schools, rather than end their careers. This was stated in the new issue of the Izvestia podcast by two-time Olympic champion, seven-time world champion, three-time Stanley Cup winner, State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov. In his opinion, this can be a new incentive for them.
"Without participating in international competitions, they decide to end their career. I think it's wrong, especially at this time. There should be one incentive — to be an example, to become the idol of boys and girls who train in children's sports schools today. It is their responsibility to keep an eye on those guys, athletes who compete at the domestic championships. Don't be offended, but come out and be an example," the two—time Olympic champion is confident.
He also noted that domestic championships and other sporting events are not sufficiently popularized. In his opinion, if professional athletes feel that the country needs them, the desire to end their careers will disappear.
"We have forgotten how to work on internal development. We have forgotten how to appreciate what is most important. Today, the title of champion of Russia or the winner of the Cup of Russia should be the main one, with all the honors, promotions, and so on," stated the guest of the podcast.
Fetisov believes that the heads of regions should pay attention to the popularization of sports events and create conditions for their holding. In his opinion, it depends on which positions Russian athletes will be able to return to after the sanctions are lifted.
Earlier, three-time Olympic champion in synchronized swimming Alla Shishkina commented on the decision of the International Aquatics Federation (World Aquatics) to lift all restrictions on Russian athletes, noting that the entire Russian sports world "has been waiting for this for many years."
