Russian Andrey Rublev reached the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tennis tournament in Barcelona on April 16 with a prize pool of about €3 million. In the second round match, the tennis player beat Italian Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6:2, 6:3.

For Rublev, this victory was the fourth in six face-to-face confrontations with the Italian. In addition, for the first time since the Dubai tournament in February, the Russian third racket managed to win two matches in a row in the same competition. The success in Barcelona allowed Andrey to rise to 14th place in the live version of the ATP rankings.

Thus, he beat compatriot Karen Khachanov, who left the Spanish tournament after the first round. Rublev will face Czech Tomas Makhach (number 47) in the quarterfinals. Makhach reached the 1/4 finals without a fight due to the withdrawal of Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz from the tournament. In 2024, Rublev had already met with a Czech tennis player and was defeated.

On the eve of the Roland Garros tournament, the application lists for the men's and women's singles tournaments were published. The application included 12 Russian tennis players. Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev are announced in the men's singles, Mirra Andreeva, Oksana Selekhmetyeva, Anastasia Zakharova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Diana Schneider, Lyudmila Samsonova, Anna Kalinskaya, Anna Blinkova and Veronika Kudermetova in the women's singles.
