A solemn funeral ceremony was held in Germany at the Seelow Heights memorial complex in the federal state of Brandenburg. The participants paid tribute to the memory of Soviet soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War. The April 16 footage is published by Izvestia.
The event was attended by Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev, representatives of the diplomatic missions of the CIS countries, employees of the Russian House in Berlin, compatriots, local activists, schoolchildren and German citizens. They laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial.
Nechaev noted that 30,000 Soviet soldiers are buried at the 81-year-old memorial.
"We continue the good tradition of the culture of memory, visiting the monuments and graves of Soviet soldiers who died in Germany during the Great Patriotic War," he said.
German activist Gunther Buntemann emphasized that it was the Red Army that liberated Germany, losing 27 million people.
"They gave their lives for our freedom. And the freedom that we have today," he said.
On April 12, diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Germany and employees of the representative office of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation paid tribute to the prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The participants of the action laid wreaths and flowers at the monument. The event was timed to coincide with the International Day of Liberation of Prisoners of Nazi Concentration Camps and the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Genocide of the Soviet People during the Great Patriotic War.
