Russian companies are increasingly faced with the need to retain older employees, as staff shortages are increasing amid demographic changes. This was announced by RBC on April 16.

"In the next five to seven years, adapting corporate practices to 65+ employees will not be a matter of choice, but of business survival," said Tatiana Podolskaya, an expert at the Presidential Academy.

According to experts, the average age of employees in Russia already exceeds 42 years and continues to grow. At the same time, a significant part of citizens plans to continue working after retirement. The main reason remains financial necessity, but an important role is played by the desire to remain active, the habit of work and the desire to remain in demand.

Experts emphasize that the labor market is gradually changing attitudes towards older employees. Employers are increasingly opting for experienced professionals, as they demonstrate greater responsibility, stability, and the ability to solve complex tasks. With a shortage of staff, it is becoming more difficult for businesses to invest in training young professionals, which increases the demand for "silver" workers.

"For employees over 50, status and recognition are often more important than formal promotion. Often these people are deep professionals for whom implementation is more important than team management," Alexey states Klochkov, founder and CEO of the research company Happy Job.

According to Maria Orlovskaya, founder and managing partner of Teamsonance, the involvement of experienced employees allows not only to reduce staff turnover, but also to improve the quality of decisions made due to their ability to take into account long-term consequences. In addition, the role of mentoring and knowledge transfer is increasing, which is especially important in conditions of a shortage of specialists.

At the same time, companies face a number of challenges. Among them is the need to improve the digital literacy of older employees, adapt work processes and overcome age stereotypes. Experts note that the key factor is the ability to build effective cooperation in teams of different ages.

According to experts, companies will have to reconsider their approaches to personnel management. We are talking about introducing flexible forms of employment, changing the performance assessment system and creating conditions for the transfer of experience between generations.

Experts also point out that employees themselves must adapt to changes in the labor market in advance. Developing skills, maintaining health, and being ready to learn are becoming important factors in maintaining demand.

Analysts predict that companies that can integrate age diversity into their corporate culture will gain a competitive advantage through a combination of experience and flexibility.

Earlier, on April 2, Alexandra Naumova, director of HR recruitment at Ventra HR holding, said that older Russians began to look for work and part-time work much more actively in 2025 against the background of financial and demographic factors. Today, representatives of the "silver" generation are in demand in a wide range of fields, especially where experience is valued and there is no high physical activity.
