Russians are increasingly introducing eco-friendly habits into their daily lives, but not all of them really bring tangible benefits. Chemist and science journalist Sakina Zeynalova told Izvestia on April 16 about what actions give measurable results without radical lifestyle changes.

"Eco—habituation is something that you can do right now without turning your life into a feat. Walking to the store, a water filter, local products and one refillable bottle are already having an effect," the expert noted.

Zeynalova stressed that one of the most underestimated ways to reduce the burden on the environment is to avoid unnecessary trips by car. Even short trips on foot or by bike can reduce fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

The expert paid special attention to reusable items. According to her, they are really effective only with prolonged use. Buying a large number of eco-bags or containers without their regular use creates only the illusion of environmental friendliness, whereas one item used daily gives a real result.

The selection of products remains an important area. Buying local products reduces the burden on logistics and reduces the consumption of resources spent on transportation and storage. At the same time, we are not talking about abandoning the usual diet, but about a more careful choice of the origin of goods.

The expert also noted the role of separate waste collection, especially plastic, which can be recycled multiple times. Despite the uneven development of infrastructure in the regions, the volume of processing in Russia continues to grow and already reaches about 1 million tons per year.

According to Zeynalova, even with limited infrastructure, demand from the population remains a key factor in the development of the recycling system. Simple actions, such as sorting waste at home, gradually form a sustainable ecological culture. Additional measures such as the use of energy—saving lamps, participation in landscaping and careful treatment of water can also be implemented without significant cost and effort.

On January 23, hydrogeologist Zhora Kavanosyan informed Izvestia about environmentally harmful household habits. Despite government "green" programs, the low environmental discipline of the population exacerbates the situation, while many believe that personal actions do not matter. However, it is the mass nature of household solutions that determines the overall effect. Among the most harmful non-obvious habits, the expert singled out overeating, leading to huge amounts of organic waste in landfills, where they emit methane and spoil recyclables.
