Jewelry is increasingly becoming a part of everyday life: they are worn not only on the go, but also at home, often without removing even during sleep. Taisiya Iznova, SOKOLOV's category director, told Izvestia on April 17 about how this affects their appearance and durability.

"If an ornament is intended for permanent wear, it is important to take into account not only its appearance, but also its design and its own feelings. The product should not distract or create discomfort. But even the most comfortable jewelry should be removed periodically, it helps to preserve their appearance and extend their service life," the expert noted.

According to her, during sleep, the products are subjected to constant mechanical stress. Chains and thin bracelets can twist and stretch, clasps can deform, and earrings can create pressure on the earlobe when changing positions. Especially vulnerable are items with pendants, long earrings, and chains with pendants that easily cling to hair and fabric, which eventually weakens the fastenings.

An additional risk is associated with rings with protruding stones: due to friction and pressure, the fastening of the inserts may gradually weaken.

Contact with water also affects the condition of jewelry, especially with regular exposure. Hot water, soap, and care products leave a plaque that tarnishes metal and makes stones lose their luster. In swimming pools and the sea, the influence of chlorine and salt is added to this, accelerating the wear of coatings, especially on gold-plated products.

The expert stressed that with daily contact with water, the effect accumulates.: The coating wears out faster, and moisture and dirt can accumulate at the joints. First of all, this applies to rings and bracelets, which are most often in contact with water in everyday life. In such cases, it is recommended to remove jewelry at least while washing hands or using household chemicals.

At the same time, laconic products without inserts, made of durable metals, better tolerate everyday wear. However, even they need regular cleaning to preserve their appearance.

A dermatologist, cosmetologist, and co-owner of a network of clinics, Dr. Zarema Omarova, told Izvestia on February 27 that low-quality jewelry can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations, especially if it contains alloys such as nickel, cobalt, or chromium. Most often, allergic reactions are caused not by "pure" metals, but by alloys that are used in the manufacture of jewelry to increase strength and reduce cost. The most significant allergen is nickel, whose ions can penetrate into the upper layers of the skin and cause inflammation. In this regard, as Omarova noted, nickel remains one of the most common causes of contact allergic dermatitis.
