On average, an electric toothbrush is more effective than a conventional one, but the quality of oral care primarily depends on the correct cleaning technique. On April 18, Marina Firstova, a dental hygienist at the Dentistoff Scientific Dentistry, told Izvestia.

"An electric toothbrush really shows better results than a manual toothbrush. And this is natural, because she makes the routine easier: firstly, she makes frequent movements herself, and secondly, she often has a timer and a pressure sensor that simplify the process. However, an ordinary toothbrush copes with its task no worse if its owner follows the necessary technique and brushes his teeth for the prescribed two minutes," she noted.

According to the specialist, the main task of hygiene is to remove soft plaque, which accumulates on the surface of the teeth and along the gum line and can lead to caries and inflammatory diseases.

The expert stressed that the brush itself is only a tool, and the key role is played by technology: it is necessary to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, holding the brush at an angle of about 45 degrees and treating all the surfaces of the teeth.

"One of the most common mistakes is pushing too hard. People think that this way they clean their teeth better, but in fact they can injure the gums and gradually increase sensitivity. Proper cleaning requires careful, systematic movements," added Firstova.

She noted that with the right technique, a regular brush provides complete care, but it is important to choose models with soft bristles and a comfortable head. At the same time, one brush is not enough — it is necessary to use additional hygiene products, such as dental floss or interdental brushes.

According to the expert, electric brushes are especially convenient for children, the elderly, patients with braces or reduced hand motor skills, as well as for those who do not follow the recommended cleaning time. Firstova added that the choice of brush should be based on the convenience of daily use.

"The most correct brush is the one that a person uses to really carefully and regularly remove plaque. If it's a regular brush and good technique, that's enough. If it's easier to keep time and pressure with an electric one, it means it will be a better choice for this particular patient," she concluded.

Orthodontist Andrey Zhuk spoke on April 5 about ways to preserve teeth and avoid installing veneers. The expert emphasized that orthodontic treatment requires an individual approach and strategic planning. The doctor must take into account the characteristics of the patient's body in order to achieve a safe and sustainable result.
