American actress Audrey Plaza, star of the TV series "White Lotus", became the heroine of two major secular news stories at once in April 2026: on April 7, People confirmed that she was expecting her first child with actor Christopher Abbott, and a few days later, a scandal broke out on social media with accusations of treason. All this is happening against the backdrop of a tragedy that rocked Hollywood in early 2025: the death of her husband, director Jeff Baena. Who is Audrey Plaza, how her life turned out and what is behind the current events — in the Izvestia article.

Who is Audrey Plaza

Audrey Christina Plaza was born on June 26, 1984 in Wilmington, Delaware. She grew up in a close-knit family with Puerto Rican and Irish roots — her father worked as a financial adviser, her mother as a lawyer. Plaza graduated from a Catholic girls' school, and then enrolled in the Tisha School of Film Arts at New York University, graduating in 2006. Even as a student, she honed her skills at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

However, even during her studies, life presented her with a serious challenge. At the age of 20, Plaza suffered a stroke straight away. The stroke caused temporary paralysis and temporary expressive aphasia — impaired speech and language comprehension. A few years later, during the filming of the series "Parks and Recreation", she had a transient ischemic attack right on the set. Doctors believed that birth control pills could be the cause of the first stroke. On the Smartless podcast, Plaza said that this was the reason for her restraint in contraception.

Career: From Sarcasm to Emmy Awards

After moving to Los Angeles in 2008, Plaza received three roles in one week: the main role in the series "Parks and Recreation", supporting roles in the films "Funny People" and "Scott Pilgrim against the World". It was Parks and Recreation that made her famous: from 2009 to 2015, she played April Ludgate, a sullen, sarcastic intern with inimitable humor, winning an army of fans around the world.

After the end of the series, the actress systematically expanded the range. From 2017 to 2019, she played the villain King of Shadows in the superhero drama Legion on FX, and simultaneously produced and starred in the black comedies Small Hours and Ingrid Goes West. In 2022, Plaza received Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations for her role in the HBO series White Lotus (season two), one of the most discussed projects of the year. At the same time, the thriller "Emily the Criminal" was released, which critics unanimously called the best acting work of her career. In 2024, she entered the Marvel cinematic universe, playing the witch Rio Vidal in the Disney+ series "It's All Agatha", and Time magazine included her in the list of the hundred most influential people on the planet.

Creative union: Plaza and Jeff Baena

For many years, his stellar career hid an almost completely private life from the public. In 2011, Plaza met director and screenwriter Jeff Baena at a board game party. According to the actress, from the very first days they were united by their passion for cinema.

Baena was already well-known in Hollywood by that time: he began his career with small positions with famous directors, including Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell, with whom he co-wrote the script of the cult comedy "I Love You, Huckabee" (2004). With Plasma, he created five joint projects — the zombie horror "If Your Girlfriend is a Zombie" (2014), the dark comedy "Small Hours" (2017) and the comedy "Circle Me" (2022), turning the creative partnership into one of the most organic in independent cinema.

The wedding took place in 2021, a quiet ceremony in the backyard of their own home, timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of their relationship. According to reports, Baena proposed to Plaza at a place associated with the history of the Basque witch trials in the Spanish city of Sugarramurdi. The public found out about the marriage by chance — from Plaza's Instagram post (owned by Meta, a recognized extremist organization in Russia), where she first called Baena her "beloved husband."

The tragedy of January 2025

In September 2024, the couple quietly broke up due to "family difficulties," as it later appeared in official documents. The Plaza moved to New York. In October of the same year, Baena made "disturbing statements," prompting Plaza to ask a mutual friend to visit him and make sure he was safe. After that, the director began to visit a therapist.

Despite the breakup, they remained in touch: according to the Los Angeles County Medical examiner, on the eve of Baen's death and Plaza talked on the phone, and three hours before the tragedy, he sent her a message. Baena was found dead in his Los Angeles home on January 3, 2025. He was 47 years old. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner stated suicide, noting that he had no previous attempts.

"This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are eternally grateful to everyone who expressed their support. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time," Plaza and Baena's family said in a joint statement published by Variety.

The actress spoke publicly about her grief only a few months later. In August 2025, on the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Plaza admitted that, in general, she "functions and feels sincere gratitude for continuing to go through life, but every day is given to her as a struggle."

Scandal: Baena's brother and accusations of treason

After it became known about Plaza's pregnancy on April 7, 2026, Jeff's brother, Brad Baena, posted a screenshot of the pregnancy headline on Instagram.

"Once a cheater, always a cheater," the publication says.

He added that pregnancy is an "instant karma" that overtook Plaza about 15 months after his brother's death. Shortly after the wave of posts, Brad's Instagram account went private.

It is important to emphasize that the accusation of infidelity remains unconfirmed and is widely described online as a rumor. Neither Plaza nor Abbott have publicly responded to these statements. The public's reaction was divided: some commentators condemned the actress for, in their opinion, too soon "starting a new life," others came to her defense.

New Novel: Christopher Abbott

Christopher Abbott, an actor known to a wide audience for his role as Charlie Dattolo in the HBO series Girls, met Plasma in 2019 on the set of the psychological thriller Black Bear. In 2023, they met again at the off—broadway revival of the play "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea" - and received high critical acclaim.

The first rumors about the relationship appeared in July 2025, when the couple was photographed together in a country cafe near New York. In November 2025, they were seen at the New York Knicks match, and in February 2026, at the Paris Fashion Week show. For the first time, Plaza confirmed her relationship and pregnancy on the Smartless podcast.

"There's a baby inside me right now." According to her, she "always wanted to see what it was like to be a mother," she said.

Plaza and Abbott appeared on April 9 at the opening of the Broadway revival of "Death of a Salesman," where Abbott plays Biff Loman in a production starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf. At the after-performance party at Katz's Deli restaurant in New York, Plaza was wearing a dark ensemble with several strands of pendants and, judging by the pictures, looked happy.
