In spring, the risk of irritation and inflammatory eye diseases increases due to weather and seasonal factors. Aigul Otkhozoria, an ophthalmologist at the 3Z clinic in Moscow, told Izvestia about this on April 14.

"During walks during the active flowering period, pollen directly gets to the surface of the eye and can increase itching, redness and lacrimation. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the windows closed whenever possible, and when going outside, do not forget to use glasses," she said.

According to the specialist, one of the most common conditions during this period is allergic conjunctivitis. It is manifested by itching, redness, swelling of the eyelids and lacrimation, and may also be accompanied by a runny nose and sneezing.

The expert added that the number of cases of viral conjunctivitis is also increasing in the spring. Such diseases are often confused with allergies, but they require a different approach to treatment. As a preventive measure, it is recommended to observe hand hygiene and use individual household items.

The doctor paid special attention to more serious conditions, such as keratoconjunctivitis, in which inflammation affects not only the mucous membrane, but also the cornea. This can cause severe photophobia and pain, and in severe cases— lead to complications.

"In more severe cases, damage and scarring of the eye tissues, prolonged dryness and bacterial infection may occur. The combination of allergic manifestations and severe photophobia or pain is a reason for an immediate face—to-face examination by an ophthalmologist due to the risk of complications," the specialist said.

In addition, the risk of photokeratitis increases in the spring — damage to the cornea due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. According to the expert, prolonged exposure to the sun without protection can cause pain and increased sensitivity to light.

Dry eye syndrome also worsens during this period. Its development is facilitated by wind, pollen, temperature changes and dry air, which leads to a feeling of "sand" and burning. The expert recommended using sunglasses with UV protection, keeping the windows closed during the active flowering period, as well as humidifying the air in the room.

"With persistent unpleasant symptoms, it is important not to ignore the alarm signals and not wait for it to "pass by itself": early diagnosis will help to choose treatment faster and reduce the risk of complications," emphasized Otkhozoria.

On March 19, Anastasia Kotelnikova, ophthalmologist at the SM Clinic, PhD, gave advice on protecting eyes from the March sun. To protect your eyes, the specialist advised wearing sunglasses with UV protection. She recommended using moisturizing eye drops, which contain antioxidants that help reduce exposure to solar radiation and accelerate cell repair.
