The FMBA has received approval for the clinical use of a vaccine against bowel cancer

The Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) has received permission for the clinical use of the personalized neoantigenic mRNA vaccine Oncorna for the treatment of colorectal cancer. This was announced on April 13 by the FMBA press service.

It is specified that this is the agency's second personalized cancer vaccine against this type of cancer.

"Another domestic cancer vaccine developed by the FMBA of Russia has received permission for clinical use. <...> Preclinical studies of the drug <...> have fully confirmed its effectiveness and safety," said Veronika Skvortsova, head of the agency.

So, after the vaccine is injected under the skin, the patient's immune system is activated, and immune cells begin to attack the tumor. The vaccine is based on lipid nanoparticles with synthesized messenger RNA encoding an individual set of neoantigens specific to a particular patient's tumor.

It is noted that the drug is intended for adult patients with a metastatic form of the disease who have undergone at least two lines of systemic therapy. In addition, it is planned to be used in colorectal cancer with microsatellite instability in combination with checkpoint inhibitors of the immune response.

Oncologist Evgeny Cheremushkin said on April 1 that in the future, the domestic cancer vaccine will be available for free under compulsory medical insurance, while the vaccine will be developed individually for each tumor. He explained that such vaccines are more often used in the early stages of the disease, but there are limitations: experimental methods cannot be used until standard treatment options are exhausted, so they are first tested on patients with stage four.

On March 2, Gleb Hrebtov, an oncologist and surgeon at SM Clinic, said that bowel cancer is increasingly being detected in people aged 40-48, although previously this disease was considered to be characteristic mainly of the elderly. He called the main risk factor a sedentary lifestyle.
