The veterinarian warned about plants dangerous for pets in the country
Veterinarian Taisiya Ilyina warned that the suburban area, despite its apparent safety, may pose a risk to animals. In conversation with aif.ru On Monday, April 13, she noted that many familiar plants can cause poisoning or irritation even through accidental contact, and pets often try them out of curiosity or boredom.
The expert noted that lilies (especially for cats), tulips, daffodils and some ornamental shrubs are particularly dangerous. Tomato tops and potato leaves are also undesirable. She stressed that the severity of the consequences depends on the amount eaten, as well as on the size and health of the animal. At the same time, you should not rely on the pet's "instinct" — it does not always protect against dangerous plants.
Ilyina recommended that you think about the zoning of the site in advance: limit access to potentially dangerous flower beds, choose safe plants for open areas and take into account the use of fertilizers and chemicals. She added that it is important to monitor the pet's behavior and, if necessary, adjust the environment to reduce risks.
In March, Mikhail Shelyakov, a veterinarian of the highest qualification category, told Moscow 24 that before traveling outside the city, especially if the pet is going to have contact with nature and other animals, it is important to carry out all preventive treatments in advance: against worms and ticks, as well as update vaccination.
Veterinarian Dmitry Blumenkranz, in turn, warned that lilies can cause acute kidney failure in cats. If a cat lives in the house, it is better to give preference to safe alternatives: orchids (phalaenopsis), gerberas, eustoma, sunflowers or decorative greenery without toxic impurities. 360.ru .
At the same time, cynologist Vladimir Golubev warned that lilies are considered one of the most dangerous plants for animals. Their pollen can settle on animal fur and enter the body during licking.
In February, Natalia Tabunshchikova, a zoopsychologist and veterinarian, told RT that common indoor plants dangerous to dogs and cats include aloe, sago palm, dieffenbachia, all types of lilies (including cut fragrant flowers), as well as irises, chrysanthemums, azaleas, rhododendrons, begonias, and some species of ficus.
In January Pravda.Ru She wrote that, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, hundreds of thousands of cases of pet poisoning are recorded annually. Some of them are related specifically to eating plants. The severity of the consequences depends on the size of the animal, the amount eaten, and the type of toxins.
