The teacher stated the benefits of compulsory labor in schools
The introduction of compulsory socially useful work in schools is aimed at fostering children's responsibility for the common space and respect for work. Elizaveta Oleinik, a teacher of additional education, a philologist, and a translator, told Izvestia about this on April 13.
"This practice solves several important tasks at once. First of all, it forms the child's understanding that school is not just a place where services are provided to him, but a common space for which everyone is responsible. Through feasible and understandable work, children learn discipline, accuracy, respect for other people's efforts and for the result of a common cause," she said.
According to the expert, the introduction of such practices can also affect the atmosphere in the school. This way, in her opinion, students will begin to perceive the learning space as shared, not someone else's, and take more care of furniture, materials, and cleanliness.
"When children use the school space and participate in its maintenance, their very optics change: the school ceases to be perceived as a "foreign territory" where someone is obliged to do everything for them. As a rule, after such practices, children take more care of furniture, walls, educational materials, and cleanliness in the classroom and corridors. There is a calmer and more responsible attitude towards the general order," Oleinik concluded.
Olga Pavlova, a member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, said on April 13 that it was necessary to resume the practice of socially useful work in Russian schools. According to Pavlova, students could clean their desks and blackboards after lessons, prepare the class for the next lesson, and take care of plants in the classroom and recreation areas. It is also proposed to improve the school grounds by removing foliage, planting trees and flowers, working on the school grounds, in the garden and clearing paths in winter.
