- Lercek's ex-husband warned the children before the trial about a possible non-return home
Artem, the former husband of blogger Lerchek (Valeria Chekalina), said that he came to court with a "heavy heart" and warned the children that he might not return home. His words were reported on April 13 by a correspondent of Izvestia.
"It was with a heavy heart that I had to tell the children over the weekend that I might not be coming home. It's hard enough for them that Mom is sick. She has another course of chemotherapy tomorrow," Chekalin said.
He noted that he goes to the verdict with a "clear conscience."
"I know that I am not to blame for what I am accused of," concluded Chekalin.
Earlier, the blogger's lawyers expressed hope for an acquittal. In addition, Lercek appealed to the court to show mercy to Chekalin.
On March 16, the court released Chekalina from house arrest after confirming that she had cancer. Also, due to illness, it was allowed to suspend judicial proceedings in the blogger's criminal case on her withdrawal of more than 250 million rubles to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A correspondent for Izvestia from the courtroom reported that the blogger's children live with her ex-husband.
The hospital doctors assessed Lercek's condition as moderate, her lawyer said. On March 11, Chekalina began treatment at the State Cancer Center. She was later taken to a medical facility to begin a course of chemotherapy. The lover and father of her fourth child, Luis Squicciarini, announced on March 8 that she had cancer cells.
