- More than 370 people have contracted an acute intestinal infection in Murom. The main thing
375 cases of acute intestinal infection were detected in Murom district, 188 children among the cases. Vaccination measures are being carried out. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
The circumstances of the incident
In the territory of Murom district, the total number of reported cases of acute intestinal infection has reached 375. The infection affected both the adult and child populations in equal proportions. There are 188 children and 187 adult patients among those who have applied for medical help.
Most of the patients have been transferred to outpatient work with doctors. Currently, 129 children and 106 adults are receiving treatment outside hospitals. Specialists continue to monitor the condition of all applicants, the government of the Vladimir region reported on the Telegram channel.
Causes and versions of infection
Experts call the main version of the incident the infection entering the centralized water supply system of the city. The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that norovirus of the second type was detected in tap water samples taken at the places of residence of the sick. A similar pathogen was detected in the analyses of the victims themselves.
The version about a possible accident at the sewer collector, which was previously discussed in the press, has not yet been confirmed, as cases of infection have been recorded in different areas of Murom.
Experts continue to study all possible mechanisms for the virus to enter the water supply. The investigative authorities have already opened a criminal case on the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements.
Expert opinion and measures taken
Virologist Anatoly Altstein explained that noroviruses are highly resistant in the external environment and are easily transmitted from person to person. The infection affects the small intestine, causing typical symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, which usually persist for three to five days. The specialist stressed that the widespread nature of the disease in Murom is a serious concern.
"The peculiarity of noroviruses is that they persist quite well in the external environment and can easily infect humans," said Anatoly Altstein.
The district authorities are taking emergency preventive measures in connection with the incident. The head of the Murom district, Evgeny Rychkov, announced the start of large-scale disinfection in public transport. Buses will be treated with special solutions, special attention will be paid to handrails and doors.
"Presumably, the cause of this disease is norovirus, but more often it is called intestinal flu," said Evgeny Rychkov.
