Nine citizens of the Russian Federation are currently being held in correctional institutions of the Republic of Cyprus. This was announced on April 10 by the press secretary of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order Nicoletta Tirimou.

"According to the Department of Prisons, nine Russian citizens are currently being held in custody," she said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the official representative of the department, the total number of prisoners in Cypriot prisons has reached 1,182 people. Foreign citizens make up more than half of this number (52%).

A total of 616 foreigners are serving their sentences in places of detention in Cyprus, concluded Thirimou.
