Modern interiors are often designed with an emphasis on trends, but they do not always take into account psychological comfort, which is why a stylish apartment can cause fatigue. Olga Manukovskaya, the designer of the Level Group, told about this on April 9.

According to her, the popular open-plan layout does not always work to the benefit of residents, as combining the kitchen, living room and work area blurs the boundaries between business and leisure.

"In such an environment, the brain switches worse, and a person constantly remains in the "activity mode", which increases the level of background stress. This is especially noticeable when working remotely," Manukovskaya explained in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

The expert noted that in the presence of an open plan, it is important to create visual boundaries using shelving, screens or different lighting. Even conditional zoning helps the brain to switch. The designer called the lack of personal space the second negative factor.

The constant presence of other people, according to the expert, increases irritability, so the apartment must have a privacy area, such as an armchair by the window or a separate corner with a floor lamp.

"Add a privacy area. <...> It is important that you have a place where you can be alone and recover," Manukovskaya recommends.

She added that excessive visual noise also leads to overwork: shelves overloaded with decor and colorful color combinations. The brain spends more resources processing such a stream of stimuli, which increases anxiety. The designer advises using closed storage systems and removing unnecessary items from surfaces.

In addition, improper lighting affects your well-being. According to Manukovskaya, cold or too bright light disrupts biorhythms and spoils the quality of sleep.

"If you want to make the space more comfortable, reassemble the lighting. The ideal option is several scenarios: general light, local (lamps, sconces), soft evening. Warm light in residential areas helps to relax and reduces tension," the expert explained.

Architect, head of the restoration bureau "827" Elena Pilipenko said on April 7 that the way people behave in an urban environment — from the level of aggression in traffic jams to willingness to communicate with neighbors — is largely determined by the peculiarities of layout and architecture. According to her, architecture directly affects the social connections and mental state of the citizens.
