The date of Easter is transitional, and it is celebrated on different days each year. In 2026, the celebration falls on April 12, and in 2027, the Orthodox will celebrate it on May 2. This was stated in an interview with Izvestia by the head of the missionary department of the Pesochen diocese, Priest Vladislav Beregovoy.

According to him, the rules governing the date of the main church celebration were adopted at the First Ecumenical Council in 325. Then it was established that Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon, which comes after the vernal equinox.

"That is, the calculation is influenced by several factors that annually "move" the calendar, primarily the vernal equinox. It is from this moment that the countdown begins. Therefore, it is necessary to wait for the first full moon in spring," Beregovoy added.

The priest noted that the connection with Passover, the Jewish Passover, is also one of the factors influencing the change in the date of the celebration. Orthodox Easter should be celebrated after the Jewish one, he added. In addition, the full moon also affects when to celebrate the holiday.

"If the full moon falls on Saturday, Easter is celebrated the next day," Beregovoy said.

The priest stressed that due to the reference to the lunar cycle and the use of the Julian calendar, the date of the celebration may vary from April 4 to May 8.

The celebration of Catholic Easter, which is tied to the Gregorian calendar, is also determined by the lunar cycle and the vernal equinox. Like the Orthodox Church, it is often celebrated on different dates. For example, in 2026, Catholic Easter was held on April 5. In 2027, the holiday falls on March 28.

Earlier, on April 6, Vladislav Beregovoy recommended that believers in the last week before Easter not cook cakes themselves, but attend divine services. According to him, it is better to buy a cake in the store and come to Holy Week services, especially on Holy Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
