Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed decrees denouncing the founding agreements with the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the relevant documents were published in the Official Monitor on April 8.

Thus, the head of state terminated two agreements — on the establishment of the CIS and its protocol, as well as on the charter of the commonwealth.

The Moldovan parliament approved the draft denunciations of the agreements at a meeting on April 2 in the final reading. It was specified that after this, the CIS leadership would receive an official notification from Chisinau, after which the republic's withdrawal from the association would be settled within 12 months.

On March 3, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Sergei Lebedev, announced that Moldova was withdrawing from the CIS while maintaining 208 agreements. The Secretary General added that the country will no longer be able to participate in the closed agreements of the Commonwealth and its participation in other agreements will be complicated.

As Vladimir Zharikhin, deputy head of the Institute of CIS Countries, explained on April 7, Moldova plans to withdraw from the commonwealth based on Georgia's experience. The expert noted that during the withdrawal from the CIS, Georgia discovered that this action would lead to the termination of agreements with Moscow and other members of the organization. As a result, Tbilisi managed to withdraw from the political agreements, but managed to preserve those that affected the practical parts.
