Hockey club (HC) Washington Capitals has nominated its captain Alexander Ovechkin as a nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy. This was announced on April 8 by journalist Sammy Silber on her page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

"The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player who best embodies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Ovechkin was named the Capitals' nominee," the publication says.

The award is presented by members of the Association of Professional Hockey Journalists (PHWA), which unites media representatives from all over North America. Each National Hockey League (NHL) club independently determines its representative.

In the entire history of this award, Russian hockey players have never won it. Ovechkin's nomination gives the Washington captain a chance to go down in history as the first representative of Russia to receive this prestigious trophy. The journalists' vote will take place after the end of the NHL regular season.

On April 7, HC Washington Capitals released a video dedicated to the record of the team's captain, Russian Alexander Ovechkin, in the number of goals scored in the regular NHL championships. Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the National Hockey League regular season on April 6, 2025, against the New York Islanders, breaking Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals.
