As of the end of March, 50 Russian citizens are being held in correctional institutions in Italy. This became known on April 8 from the data of the Italian Ministry of Justice.

"As of March 31, 48 men and two women from Russia are in custody," RIA Novosti cites statistics.

It is specified that 15 of these people are awaiting a final verdict. The proportion of Russians among all prisoners in Italy is about 0.2%. At the same time, representatives of the Italian Ministry of Justice did not specify under what articles Russian citizens were convicted.

According to the ministry, the largest number of foreign prisoners in the country are Moroccan citizens — more than 4.5 thousand people. This is followed by immigrants from Tunisia, Romania and Albania.

It is noted that a year earlier, 55 Russians, including six women, were in Italian prisons. In general, the country's penitentiary system is experiencing an overload: with a capacity of about 51 thousand places, about 64 thousand people are actually being held, of which about 20 thousand are foreigners.

On March 19, the Russian government submitted to the State Duma a bill providing for the possibility of involving the armed forces to protect Russian citizens who have been arrested or prosecuted by foreign courts. It was clarified that Russian President Vladimir Putin has the right to take measures to protect the country and its citizens if the decisions of foreign and international bodies contradict the interests of Russia and the foundations of its public law and order.
