The Iranian population is afraid to go out to open rallies against the existing political regime, because they have been threatened with the death penalty. This was announced by US President Donald Trump at a press conference on April 6.

"We have a regime change, but we didn't do it for the sake of regime change. They (the Iranians. — Ed.) they should have done it (to go to rallies against the authorities. — Ed.). But, again, the consequences are great. I was told that they were warned: if you protest, you will be shot immediately," the head of state noted.

The American leader recalled how in 2020 he tried to ask for a pardon for an Iranian fighter, 27-year-old Navid Afkari, who was sentenced to death for participating in anti-government protests.

"You saw what happened to the young wrestler. By the way, he was a great champion. He was a great wrestler, one of the best in the world. And he and two friends were hanged, and all they did was talk a little bit about freedom. They wanted freedom, and they were brutally executed," Trump said.

He added that in the current US-Israeli military offensive, the death toll has probably already reached 45,000 people.

"So, you know, when someone stays at home, knowing that if they go out to protest, they will immediately be shot and killed," the US president pointed out.

On April 1, Trump warned Iran that the United States would launch attacks on the country's energy facilities if a deal to end the conflict was not concluded. According to him, the new Iranian leadership is less radical than the previous one, but the change of power in the state was not among the goals of the US operation, he added.

On the same day, as Bloomberg reported, Trump, through Vice President Jay D. Vance, delivered an ultimatum to the Iranian authorities related to the end of the war.
