Russia has secured the right to explore for mineral resources in the Pacific Ocean. This was announced on April 4 at the Russian Embassy in Kingston (Jamaica).

"The application of the contractor JSC Yuzhmorgeologiya was approved by consensus by the Council of the International Seabed Authority (IOM)," the diplomatic mission told RIA Novosti.

The Board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs approved the extension of the contract of the Russian company for five years. This will allow Yuzhmorgeologiya to conduct exploration in the Clarion-Clipperton area until 2031. This site is located west of Mexico and southeast of Hawaii and is known for its abundance of ferromanganese nodules containing manganese, copper and nickel.

Science Daily magazine reported on February 3 that a recent study led by Jasha Dehm, a researcher at the University of the South Pacific, showed that about a third of the fish found in Pacific island countries and territories contain microplastics. Scientists have recorded the highest rate of pollution in the Fiji region: almost 75% of fish contain microplastics, which is significantly higher than the global average of 49%.
