Sport and its national forms are an intangible heritage that must be protected. Mikhail Degtyarev, the Russian Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee, announced this in an interview with Izvestia on April 4.
According to him, many countries around the world admire Russia's practice of preserving national sports.
"We have Federations [of national sports] created, many of them receive money, including from the budget. There is practically no such thing anywhere in the world. That's why we feel like the leaders here and are ready to win any competition," Degtyarev said at the World Ethnosport Confederation, where they discussed the launch of the Ethnosport 2027 project.
The head of the Ministry of Sports stressed that the ministry coordinates all actions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of State gives instructions on preserving the intangible heritage and supporting national sports in the regions, he added.
"And my other colleagues all note the role of our president, everyone knows that he does a lot to preserve the intangible heritage of the peoples of Russia. And in the Year of the Unity of the Peoples of the Russian Federation, this is especially well perceived here," he concluded.
Degtyarev said on March 19 that he expects Russian athletes to perform with the national flag and anthem at the next Olympics. He noted that 16 international federations already allow juniors with flags and anthems by decision of the IOC.
On March 18, Putin expressed hope that the IOC would stop discriminating against Russian athletes and stop "doing magic tricks." Degtyarev also noted that the IOC, in his opinion, has taken a course to reduce the politicization of sports, and stressed that the Ministry of Sports continues to fight for the restoration of the rights of Russian athletes.
