The US attempt to force the allies to open the Strait of Hormuz by military means, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes, is considered unrealistic and practically impossible. This was reported on April 3 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Experts note that escorting tankers in a narrow strait is "almost impossible" in war conditions, and the allies themselves rely not on a military scenario, but on "political and diplomatic steps." As the participants of the international meeting emphasized, military intervention was not even considered among the options.

"Forcing the opening of the strait by military means is unrealistic <...> it would take forever and expose ships to the risk of attacks from Iran," French President Emmanuel Macron said.

The main threat to shipping does not come from Iran's navy, but from missiles, drones, mines and small attack boats capable of attacking from the long coast and from shelters. The narrowness of the strait and fixed routes make ships vulnerable, and the response time is minimal.

Even with military convoys, protection will be limited: "the challenge is not only whether it can be done, but whether it can be done all the time." As a result, analysts estimate that the real opening of the strait is possible only after a cease-fire and increased international pressure on Iran.

American leader Donald Trump said yesterday that the United States allegedly needs a little time to open the Strait of Hormuz and start transporting oil through it. He also added that the United States would be able to "take oil and make a fortune," wondering if this would be a "powerful release of an oil fountain" for the world.

CNN said on April 1 that Iran's continued control of the Strait of Hormuz after the end of the war would be regarded by the international community as a strategic failure by the United States. It was noted that in this scenario, Iran would try to "monetize its new position" by imposing duties on tankers traveling through the strait.
