Moldova may be readmitted to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the future. This was announced on April 3 by the Secretary General of the CIS Sergey Lebedev.

"Why not?" he replied to TASS when asked if Moldova would be re—admitted to the commonwealth.

Lebedev noted on the same day that Moldova had decided to withdraw from the CIS while maintaining the validity of 208 agreements. He also added that the country would no longer be able to participate in the closed agreements of the commonwealth.

On January 19, the Moldovan authorities announced the beginning of the procedure for denouncing key agreements underlying the country's membership in the CIS. The country's Foreign Minister, Mihai Popsoi, explained that participation in the Commonwealth, according to the government, is incompatible with Moldova's status as a candidate for membership in the European Union.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed on January 20 that the CIS remains an important and useful platform for cooperation, and Chisinau's withdrawal from the organization is only regrettable.
