In Russia, omens have always been given special importance. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about popular signs for April 5, as well as about church holidays that fall on this date.

Folk signs for April 5, 2026

In Russia, on this day, two saints with the same name were remembered at once — Nikon of Sicily and Nikon of the Caves, so the date was dubbed Nikon Day. It was a day of thorough cleaning, both in the house and in the garden. The diligent owners whitewashed the stoves, shook out the beds, changed the straw in the mattresses, and took out the trash.

They also washed benches, floors and tables with an infusion of dried mint to expel evil spirits from the house. After cleaning, the whole family went to the sauna, where mint was also needed: shelves were covered with this herb, and steam was added to its decoction.

Apple trees, mountain ash, black and red currants began to be planted in Nikon gardens, and birds were invited to protect them from pests, regaling them with crumbs and seeds.

According to weather observations, if the day was warm and frosts occurred at night, it was worth expecting fine weather in April. If there is still snow on the ground and the first spring thunder is heard, the summer will be cold.

Other signs of the day:

  • Blue clouds float across the sky to warm rains;
  • the sun in the circles leads to a rich harvest;
  • At noon, the sun appeared — for a hot summer;
  • cloudy at noon — for a rainy summer;
  • clear and starry sky at night — for morning frosts;
  • a cat coughs or sneezes — to rain;
  • The squirrel came out of the nest to get warm.

What not to do on April 5th

Various superstitions were associated with Nikon Day in Russia. It was believed that you should not be lazy on a holiday, otherwise you can lose your health and prosperity. Many of the prohibitions were related to the financial sphere and household life.

What else can not be done on this day:

  • leaving money in a visible place leads to losses;
  • lying down on other people's pillows — so that you don't suffer from nightmares and "take over" other people's worries.;
  • gossiping and spreading rumors can lead to problems in the family.;
  • sort through beans and cereals to avoid unexpected expenses;
  • going fishing — people believed that at this time a water man was in charge of the reservoirs, and meeting him could cause serious injuries.
  • changing your hairstyle and coloring your hair can "shorten" your luck.

What is the church holiday on April 5th?

On April 5, Orthodox believers celebrate the great feast of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, which is popularly called Palm Sunday. This holiday is celebrated exactly one week before Easter and is dedicated to the solemn entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where he was greeted as King and Savior, strewing the road with palm branches and shouting "Hosanna!"

According to the Gospel, this event was preceded by a great miracle — the resurrection of the righteous Lazarus, which finally convinced the people of the divine nature of Christ. For believers, this day symbolizes the Savior's voluntary acceptance of suffering and death on the cross for the atonement of human sins.

In Russia, where palm trees do not grow, they have been replaced by willow branches, which are one of the first to bloom in spring, embodying the awakening of life and spiritual renewal. The main tradition of the holiday is a visit to the temple, where believers with lighted candles and willow branches participate in the all—night vigil and Divine Liturgy, and then consecrate the willow by sprinkling it with holy water.

The consecrated branches are brought home and placed in the red corner of the icons, where they are kept for a whole year as a symbol of the meeting of Christ and an amulet for the house. There is also a folk custom of lightly "hitting" each other with a consecrated willow tree with a wish for health. Despite the strict Great Lent, believers are allowed to relax on this day: they can eat fish, seafood and drink some red wine in honor of the holiday.

Also on this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of two saints: St. Nikon of Sicily and St. Nikon of Caves. Nikon of Sicily was born in the 3rd century in Naples. His father was a noble pagan, and his mother was a Christian. Being a warrior, during a time of mortal danger, he remembered his mother, made the sign of the cross over himself and promised to be baptized if he was saved. After surviving, he was baptized and tonsured a monk, and later became a bishop and transported 190 monks to Sicily. During the persecution of Christians, he was tortured and beheaded.

St. Nikon of the Caves lived in the 11th century. He was the first disciple and associate of the founder of the Kiev Caves Lavra, St. Anthony. During his time, he tonsured all the newly arrived monks, including St. Theodosius of the Caves. He incurred the wrath of Prince Izyaslav for tonsuring his favorites, but firmly refused to convince them to return to the world. Later, he retired to the island of Tmutarakan, where he founded a monastery with a church in the name of the Most Holy Theotokos, and returning to the Kiev Caves Lavra, he was elected abbot. He died in old age and was buried in Nearby caves.

Prayers on April 5th

On Palm Sunday, believers pray to Jesus Christ, who voluntarily chose the path of suffering to save people. On the memorial day of St. Nikon of Sicily, Christians offer prayers for healing from physical and mental illnesses, help in overcoming fears and strengthening faith. They pray to St. Nikon of the Caves for healing from serious ailments, especially leg diseases and exhaustion, as well as for liberation from captivity, strengthening the spirit in suffering and deliverance from despondency.

And just as then the people who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, having received the branches of the trees and the branches of the dates, confessed Thee, the Son of David, so now, on this feast day, in imitation of them, keep and preserve the branches in the hands of those who bear them. And as these people and children offer "hosanna" to You, grant us also, in psalms and penances, with pure and unclean lips, to glorify all Your greatness on this feast and throughout the week of Your passion, and to attain without condemnation and partake of the Divine joys of Holy Easter in the most luminous days of Your Life-giving Resurrection, so that we may sing and glorify Your Divinity. together with Your Beginningless Father and Your Most Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, always, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."

Pray for us, holy Father, for your spiritual children, for you have Boldness to the Heavenly King: do not be silent for us to the Lord, and do not despise us who honor you with faith and love: remember us unworthy at the Throne of the Almighty, and do not stop praying for us to Christ God, for you have been given the grace to pray for us. We don't think you're dead.: For though you have passed away from us in body, but you are still alive after death, do not depart from us in spirit, preserving us from the arrows of the enemy and all the charms of demons and the machinations of the devil, our good shepherd. For even though your relics of cancer are always visible before our eyes, your holy soul, with angelic hosts, fleshless faces, and heavenly powers, stands at the throne of the Almighty, rejoicing worthily, leading you in truth and being alive after death, we fall down and pray to you: pray for us to Almighty God, for For the benefit of our souls, and grant us time for repentance, so that we may safely pass from earth to heaven, and may we be delivered from bitter ordeals, demons of the air, and eternal torment, and may we be heiresses of the heavenly Kingdom with all the righteous who have pleased our Lord Jesus Christ from the beginning.: To Him belongs all glory, honor, and worship, together with His Beginningless Father, and with His All-holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
