- The expert spoke about the outbreak of a magnetic storm and its impact on the Earth.
Moderate G2-level magnetic storms have begun on Earth, caused by solar wind currents. This was announced to Izvestia on April 3 by Honorary Doctor of Sciences, lecturer Sergey Chumakov.
"On the afternoon of April 3, moderate G2—level magnetic storms began, this level cannot be considered extreme in any way: the index of magnetic field disturbances on our planet is 5, while the most powerful indicator on the scale is 8 and 9," the specialist explained.
According to him, geomagnetic activity is expected to decrease by Sunday afternoon or even earlier.
"The solar wind emanating from the solar corona will have an impact on the Earth for some time - perhaps its intensity will not decrease in the next 24 hours, but then forecasts give a high probability of stabilization of the situation in near-Earth space," Chumakov added.
The expert also stressed that such magnetic fluctuations have no proven negative effects on the human body. At the same time, the expert noted that during the period of geomagnetic disturbances, there may be a slight increase in the risk of equipment failures, primarily radio communication systems.
On April 2, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) reported that a medium-level magnetic storm had begun on Earth. It was clarified that this event is associated with the flow of fast solar wind, which is formed by a coronal hole.
