Experts warned about hidden costs due to late "overshooting" of cars

If you delay changing winter tires to summer tires, a motorist may face a number of adverse consequences, such as impaired handling and behavior of the car on the road, increased wear of winter tires and increased fuel consumption. Experts of the Cordiant holding told Izvestia about this on April 3.

"Winter tires significantly increase fuel consumption in the warmer months.: in addition to the fact that they are heavier than summer tires, the "softened" composition of the rubber compound with a large number of slots-tread elements creates increased resistance when driving, requiring more energy from the engine to rotate the wheels," the company explained.

In addition to fuel consumption, handling and grip deteriorate significantly, and braking distances may increase in a number of road situations, which negatively affects road safety.

The fact is that all winter tires are made of a more elastic rubber compound, which becomes even softer as the temperature increases. This accelerates the wear of the tread, and the operation of tires that have worn above the limit value (4 mm for winter and 1.6 mm for summer) is prohibited by law, Cordiant said. If we are talking about studded tires, then in hot weather on dry asphalt, the spikes experience a high load and may fall out.

It is recommended to change winter tires to summer tires when the average daily temperature is about +7 °C for three consecutive days, but in the absence of strong temperature fluctuations and especially night frosts, the experts added.

Earlier, on April 1, the Traffic Management Center (TSODD) reported that Moscow motorists can already switch to summer tires. According to Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of the capital for Transport and Industry, with the establishment of stable warm weather, drivers are strongly advised to replace winter tires with summer tires, as this directly affects the reduction of accidents. He also noted that special care should be taken by those who travel outside the city: frosts are still possible at night in the Moscow region, so it is better to plan such trips during the daytime.
