The increase in the number of students turning to psychologists is associated not only with an increase in workload, but also with a change in attitudes towards mental health. Practical psychologist Tatiana Goldman told Izvestia about this on April 2.

"Seeking psychological support is increasingly perceived as a normal practice rather than a last resort. This simultaneously reflects the real burden faced by young people and the growing awareness of mental health," the specialist noted.

Goldman emphasized that the psychological state of students is formed under the influence of several factors at once. Among them are the high intensity of training, exams, competition, as well as the need to make decisions about a future profession. The additional pressure is created by the very life stage associated with self-discovery and uncertainty.

The expert also drew attention to the impact of the digital environment. According to her, social networks increase the tendency to compare with others and form inflated expectations, which can increase anxiety levels.

Among the most common reasons for seeking help, Goldman cited anxiety, emotional exhaustion, self-esteem problems, relationship difficulties, and professional choice issues.

According to the psychologist, the increase in the number of specialists at universities is a natural reaction to the situation. It is not only about helping with difficult conditions, but also about prevention — the development of self-regulation skills and resistance to stress. The current dynamics rather indicates the development of a student support system than a sharp deterioration in their psychological state.

On the same day, the Ministry of Education and Science reported that the need of Russian students for psychological assistance is growing rapidly. The number of people seeking consultations has increased by almost 36% over the year. The staff of university psychologists has also increased significantly, more than doubling in five years.
