The expert assessed Russia's role in resolving the conflict in the Middle East
Russia is actively negotiating with the countries of the Persian Gulf and will not allow the conflict to spread to the Caspian region. This was announced on April 2 by Vladimir Morozov, Vice-Rector for Personnel Policy, Professor of the MGIMO Department of Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, at the Izvestia press center at a round table on the topic "Dynamics of conflict in the Middle East: scenarios and forecasts."
"The Middle East is in our [Russia's] underbelly. That is why we do not like what is happening in Iran, especially when the fighting is already affecting the Caspian region. Here we are already approaching the so—called red line for us," he stressed.
According to Morozov, Russia does not limit itself to declarative statements condemning the actions of the United States and Israel. Negotiations with the countries of the Persian Gulf are conducted on a daily basis — the Foreign Minister and the president communicate directly with the leadership of the regional states. According to the professor, the position of the Arab world on the conflict is far from homogeneous, and each country, including those not directly involved in the fighting, has its own position.
Morozov also noted that Russia opposes the military defeat of Iran and the establishment of a power imbalance in the region, not out of support for the Iranian political regime, but based on strategic interests. According to him, Israel has already launched several attacks on air defense facilities in northern Iran, on the Caspian coast. The professor recalled that it was the proximity of the Middle East to the Russian borders that led to Russia's direct military involvement in the Syrian conflict, and the same logic determines Moscow's current position.
