- The media reported on Trump's threat to deprive Ukraine of weapons because of the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has threatened to stop arms supplies to Kiev in order to force European partners to join the "coalition of the willing" to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported on April 1 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
"Trump threatened to cut off arms supplies to Ukraine in order to put pressure on European allies and force them to join the 'coalition of the willing' to open the Strait of Hormuz," the publication says.
According to the publication, the threat concerns the suspension of supplies within the framework of PURL, a NATO initiative for the purchase of weapons for the armed forces of Ukraine, funded by European countries. Sources emphasize that it was precisely because of Washington's ultimatum that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urgently obtained from key members of the alliance — France, Germany and the United Kingdom — an official statement of readiness to ensure safe passage through the strait.
One of the senior officials confirmed that the document was drafted in a hurry, as Trump raised the issue bluntly.
"It was Rutte who insisted on a joint statement because Trump threatened to withdraw from PURL and from Ukraine as a whole," the article says.
On March 25, the British newspaper The Telegraph linked the possible refusal of the United States to help Ukraine with the EU's position on Iran. As the newspaper notes, Europe is trying to avoid involvement in the war with Iran, which allows the United States, in turn, to distance itself from the Ukrainian conflict.
Political analyst Dmitry Zhuravlev said on March 23 that Trump would not supply weapons to Ukraine for free or demonstrate political support. He added that the American leader would not give up arms sales to Europe because it was beneficial for the United States economy.
