- Belarus did not see any substantive steps on the part of Lithuania for a serious dialogue
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry has not yet seen any real actions on the part of Lithuania that would indicate a mood for constructive negotiations after Vilnius closed the checkpoints last fall. This was announced on April 1 by the official representative of the department Ruslan Varankov.
"To date, we do not have any specific and official information about who will represent Vilnius, what powers this person has, or what content is supposed to be put into such a dialogue," BelTA news agency quoted him as saying.
Varankov suggested that such statements by Lithuania are primarily addressed to an internal audience in order to create the appearance of activity in the Belarusian direction.
He stressed that Minsk always stands for dialogue and remains open to negotiations. At the same time, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry expects not loud statements to the press, but concrete and meaningful steps that would confirm the seriousness of the Lithuanian side's intentions.
"We are counting not on media gestures, but on concrete and meaningful steps," Varankov concluded.
Lithuania completely closed the border with Belarus for a month on October 29 last year. On October 31, the State Customs Committee (SCC) stated that due to the decisions taken, almost 5,000 units of Lithuanian tractors and trailers were blocked in the territory, and explained that such a measure was a response to Lithuania's closure of both checkpoints on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
Later, on November 1 last year, the State Customs Committee of Belarus noted that Lithuanian cargo transport would be allowed to return to Lithuania only after the opening of checkpoints at the border. On November 5, Prime Minister Inga Ruginene announced that Lithuania would request to open the border and allow Lithuanian trucks to return.
On March 23, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko approved the departure of Lithuanian heavy trucks. Currently, there are more than 1,9 thousand pieces of equipment in specialized parking lots in the republic, including tractors and semi-trailers.
