Every year on April 3, Orthodox believers remember St. Cyril, Bishop of Catano (Sicily). In the national calendar, the holiday is called Cyril Katanik. In 2026, it falls on a Friday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.

Kirill Katanik – 2026: the history of the holiday

Saint Cyril was born in Antioch, one of the largest cities in ancient Syria, which was part of the Roman Empire (now the territory of the Turkish city of Antakya). According to church tradition, he was a disciple of the Apostle Peter, who appointed him bishop of the city of Catana in Sicily. His ministry took place at the turn of the I–II centuries, when Christianity was still being established.

A miracle that happened near Katana is associated with the name of the saint. There was a spring with bitter water, unsuitable for drinking. Through Cyril's prayer, the water became fresh and delicious. This event made a strong impression on the locals and helped to convert many pagans to Christianity.

In his life, Cyril appears as a wise and pious shepherd, he lived a long life and was buried in Sicily.

Traditions of the national holiday celebrated in Russia on April 3

In Russia, April 3 was called Cyril's Day, or Cyril Katanik. This nickname "grew" out of the seasonal lifestyle — by the beginning of April, the snow cover had almost completely disappeared, the toboggan run was melting, and the holiday was considered the last opportunity to ride down the mountain.

The holiday drew a line under the winter Games and reminded that it was time to rebuild in a spring mood. The sled was solemnly carried out into the yard, and after riding it was cleaned, dried and put away in the barn. To children who did not want to part with their favorite pastime, adults said: "Roar— don't roar, the sledge took the sled."

After April 3, winter entertainment gave way to spring entertainment. The children took out balls and gathered for street games, while the adults switched to lighter seasonal clothes and shoes. In the cities, they took out boots and boots, in the villages they took off felt boots and changed into bast shoes. Such shoes did not "tolerate" dampness well, and the April weather remained deceptive, so Cyril's Day was considered a time when it was especially easy to catch a cold.

To protect themselves from colds and aches, the ancestors collected hot ashes and coals in a handkerchief or cloth, and then applied them to the sore spot. The ancestors also had other ways of "healing": the patient was washed with water in which clothes were washed, or forced to kiss a cow, hoping that the animal would transfer part of its strength to a person.

There was also a belief in Russia that on April 3 a water spirit wakes up, which was considered the master of rivers, ponds and pools. He was represented as an ancient old man with bulging eyes, a fish tail, a full beard and a greenish mustache, smelling of mud and swamp water. In order not to incur his wrath, on April 3, the ancestors tried not to disturb the water unnecessarily.

What not to do on a holiday Kirill Katanik

On April 3, a number of prohibitions were in effect in Russia, primarily related to water. They tried not to disturb the rivers, ponds and pools of Cyril Katanik, for fear of angering the vodyanoi. On this day, they did not wash clothes, did not throw stones into the water and, if possible, stayed away from open bodies of water so as not to incur a series of troubles, illnesses and failures.

What else is forbidden to do on April 3rd:

  • looking at the sky after sunset — a shooting star is considered a bad sign, a harbinger of bad luck;
  • Doing wet cleaning can "blur" peace and well—being in the house.;
  • Watering plants is believed to cause them to wither;
  • Letting a cat into bed means you can wake up exhausted in the morning.;
  • quarreling, swearing, thinking about bad things — there is a risk of attracting strife and failure into life.

Folk signs for April 3rd

On Cyril Katanik, the villages carefully observed nature, the first spring changes, trying to determine by signs whether real warmth would be established soon and what the upcoming summer would be like.

  • birds splash in puddles — clear and warm days ahead;
  • birch generously gives out its juice — the summer will be wet and rainy.;
  • the mother-and-stepmother bloomed — the cold will finally recede in the coming days;
  • thunder booms on April 3 — for a bountiful harvest in autumn.
