The scammers started using landline numbers to call Russians.

Fraudsters began calling Russians from landline phones, as such numbers are still considered by many as a marker of reliability. This was announced on April 1 by Galaktion Kuchava, an expert of the Moshelovka platform of the Popular Front.

"Scammers have returned to landline communication because it is technically simple. The city number is still perceived by many as a marker of reliability. Especially among the older generation, who are used to trust wired communications more than mobile," he told RIA Novosti.

The expert noted that fixed-line operators have almost no anti-fraud tools that have long been equipped with mobile networks. He clarified that calling from a "home" number creates a false sense of formality and security for the subscriber.

According to him, scammers use a wide range of legends, they present themselves as employees of telecommunications companies, Social Fund, management companies, utilities, Gorgaz or Sobes.

Most often, they refer to the extension of the contract, the replacement of meters, the recalculation of pensions, the modernization of the communication line or the change of the code from the intercom in order to extract personal data or an SMS code that gives access to the portal of public services.

Kuchava stressed that the only real protection against such threats remains vigilance and compliance with the rule: calling from a landline number does not guarantee security, as fraudsters are able to fake any numbers.

"No official organization, be it a Social Fund, a telecom operator, a management company, or a bank, ever requires you to call an SMS code, passport information, or make financial transactions over the phone," the expert concluded.

The press service of the Moscow Region Prosecutor's office reported on March 31 that telephone fraudsters began offering potential victims services for expedited obtaining of a foreign passport, subject to full prepayment.

According to the supervisory authority, the criminals promise to issue the document within three days without waiting in line and guarantee assistance in obtaining a visa to any country in the world.
